Winners of “Draw Your Poem” Competition 2018 – 2019

S2 Lunch Hour English Quiz 2019

The English Club helped to launch the S2 Lunch Hour English Quiz with the support of all the committee members of the English Club and all the S2 English teachers. The venue for the quiz was the Conference Room. The quiz facilitated the use of English outside the classroom. The programme was an exciting English experience for all S2 Ng Wah boys. English Prose Reading Competition 2019 by the English Department

With the support of the English Department of NWCSS, the “English Prose Reading Competition 2019” was successfully held in our Conference Room in the afternoon of 27th May, 2019 (Monday). The aims of this competition were to inspire Ng Wah boys to learn how to appreciate English prose, to develop their creativity, and to learn how to express their understanding of English prose accurately with expression and clarity. This year, the passage for the junior competition was taken from “Paddington Bear”. Special thanks to Ms S Wong for organizing the competition venue, and to our adjudicators: Ms MY Wong and Mr P Bason.

Participants of HKVEP Workplace English Challenge 2019

In order to build up the confidence of Ng Wah boys in using English, showcase their talent, passion and drive in selected social topics, and develop their creativity and video presentation skills, EIGHT students from S4A and S5A joined “HKVEP Workplace English Challenge 2019” in March. The topics selected and chosen by our students were “Eco-friendly Citizen” and “Lifelong Learner”. S5 Collaborative Lesson Studies of English Department on 22nd May 2019

Two English teachers, Ms K Wong and Mr P Bason participated in the second collaborative lesson studies for the English Department through incorporating the topic of “The Application of Preposition” into their English lessons for S5A, on May 22nd. The lesson studies were very successful and inspiring for all English panel members since they helped the teachers to reflect on different delivery methods to cater for learner diversity in our school. Talking Books Competition 2019

“TALKING BOOKS” is new activity organised by the English Department to encourage students to read and share their favourite book in a 1.5 to 2 minute presentation. The aim of this activity is to both increase students’ confidence and to prepare for them for future SBA tasks. The activity was carried out smoothly on the 21st May 2019 with the help and support of the English teachers and the committee members of the English Club.

On the Staff Development Day on 17th April, all staff members went to Zhuhai to understand the latest development of the Greater Bay Area. We crossed the HongKong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, then visited Zhuhai Opera House, Kingsoft Company and Innovalley Hengqin-Macau. The trip was insightful and helped teachers to have more comprehensive knowledge about Zhuhai.

SIX English teachers including Mr W Wai (our English Panel Chairperson), Ms A Chow, Ms WY Wong, Ms S Wong, Ms K Wong and Mr P Bason participated in the S5 English Speaking Practice with Lung Cheung Government Secondary School and China Holiness Church Living Spirit College from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on 20th May 2019 (Monday). This was a very useful experience for our S5 boys as part of their preparation for the coming DSE English examinations in 2020.

S5 Joint School English Oral Practice

S5 English speaking practices received a boost with our thirty-two S5B and S5C students taking part in speaking exam practices with their counterparts from Lung Cheung government Secondary School and China Holiness Church Living Spirit College, from 3:00 to 4:45 pm on 20th May 2019 (Monday). There was a total of 120 students participating in the speaking practice. Students were able to participate in a mock exam situation, which was a valuable experience for senior students. Special thanks for the extra support by the English panel members from NWCSS.

Briefing Sessions for New Zealand and Australia Study Tours 2019

In the morning of 18th May, 2019 (Saturday), all the participants of the “New Zealand and Australia Study Tours 2019” joined the briefing session which was conducted in our School Hall by HK Catholic Diocesan Schools Council Language Proficiency Improvement Group from 9:00 am to 12 noon. Students from all the participating schools gathered with their parents to attend the briefing and, in particular, to learn about the guidelines of the tour and the information about home-stays in Wellington and Brisbane from July to August 2019.

English Talent Show 2019 by the English Language Education Committee of Hong Kong Catholic Diocesan Schools Council (Secondary Schools)

On 11th May 2019 (Saturday), thirty S5A students (our Ng Wah representatives) waited excitedly with other students from different Diocesan schools in the school hall of Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Secondary School. They were taking part in one of the most anticipated activities of the school year – the English Talent Show 2019, organized by the Hong Kong Catholic Diocesan Secondary Schools (English Language Education Committee). S5A students gave a spectacular performance of Choral Speaking named “Victorian Diarist” by Nick Toczek. Special thanks to Mr W Wai, Ms K Wong and Mr P Bason for training the students. In the morning of 4th May, 2019 (Saturday), forty-five students from S4A, S4B and S4C, participated enthusiastically in the programme "Joint School-based English Day Camp", organized by Wong Tai Sin Catholic Primary School, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. This year, the theme of the Day Camp was “Around the World”. All Ng Wah boys were playing the role of “Big Brother” and helping Primary 4 and Primary 5 students in WTSCPS to learn English through a more interesting and authentic approach. “From Kowloon City to the World “ on 16th March 2019

To support and develop the use of English and the awareness of different cultures in daily life, Ten S4 and S5 students took part in the opening ceremony of the Programme “From Kowloon City to the World 2019” which was jointly organized by the New Asia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and New Asia Middle School on 16th March, 2019. Students from twelve Secondary Schools in Hong Kong enrolled in the programme, which gave students an opportunity to develop intercultural awareness and communicative aptitude as they interacted with people with languages and cultures from around the world. The programme “From Kowloon City to the World” was a valuable opportunity for our students to meet people of different nationalities. In the captioned event, Ng Wah participants got the chance to meet and talk with exchange students from Japan, the USA, the UK, Canada, Malaysia, China and India.

Q and A Session with Dove Tales with our S2 Students

After the interactive drama on 12th March, 2019 (Tuesday), Dove Tales Production prepared one Q and A Session for thirty-two S2 Ng Wah boys which enabled them to meet the actors after the show at 11:30 am.

During the session, S2 students learned about the use of props, costumes and the stage setting of the drama they had seen earlier in the School Hall. This was an enlightening experience for our students since they could communicate directly with the performers. English Week Day ONE 12th March 2019 Interactive English Drama

On Tuesday 12th March 2019, the English Department invited the famous “Dove Tales” theatre group to host an interactive drama in our school hall for all S1 to S3 Ng Wah boys to celebrate our first day of English Week in 2019. The production was an introduction for all Ng Wah boys to Creative Arts and it was an authentic English learning experience. The show this year was “Joseph and His Dreamcoat”. All the participants were motivated and energized by the actors on the stage. The performance was so interactive that both the students and teachers of our school were totally involved in the drama. The interactive programme created a natural English learning environment for the whole school.

In order to learn how to prepare well for effective English Reading around the school campus, SIX English teachers from the English Department of NWCSS participated in the workshop being held by Hong Kong Ed City called “Workshop on Teaching Reading using Reciprocal Strategies”. Reading Workshop Writing the City: Memory and Place by HK Public Libraries and City University of Hong Kong

TWO S4 students and their English teacher, Mr W Wai, joined the “Reading Workshop - Writing the City Memory and Place” by HK Public Libraries and City University of Hong Kong in the morning on 2nd March 2019 (Saturday). This workshop comprised of a lecture and a creative writing exercise, which provided an opportunity for all the participants to explore texts written in different cultural contexts, and to compose their own autobiographical narratives set in the city of Hong Kong. The speaker at the workshop was Dr. Klaudia Lee, the Assistant professor from Department of City University of Hong Kong.

Exchange Student from Wellington, New Zealand

ONE student from St Patrick’s College of Wellington in New Zealand came to study in NWCSS for one month starting from 16th January until 15th February 2019. The exchange student is called Wilson Cheng. During his visit, he would stay in S4A and two buddies in that class have been assigned to help and support him on the school campus. On 10th December 2018 (Monday), all students from S5A achieved another excellent result in the S5 Choral Speaking Competition of the 70th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival for NWCSS. These 32 young men engaged themselves busily in the preparation work for the competition and were awarded the title of Champion in this event. This is the fifth Champion of Choral Speaking Competition in which the English Department was awarded in this academic year. Special thanks for the help and training by Ms K Wong and Mr P Bason.

“LWL guitar blurb” Life Wide Learning Activities with the English Department

Starting from October 2018, English LWL workshops were held weekly after school using the new guitars purchased by Ng Wah. The boys from all forms took the opportunity to chat in English about music and guitar, and also to try learning some guitar chords. The boys talked music with Ng Wah teachers Ms K Wong and Mr P Bason, and enjoyed an opportunity to learn some guitar chords to play popular songs. During the sessions the boys could informally chat with each other and share their favourite songs in a relaxed and fun environment.

“Fun with English Board Games” Life Wide Learning Activities with the English Department.

“Fun with English Board Games” is one of the interest groups that meets on Wednesday afternoons as part of the Life Wide Learning programme. Hosted by two teachers from the English Department, Ms A Chow and Mr W Wai, this small group of boys works attentively to play English board games together in English Corner. Students from S1 to S5 participated whole-heartedly to play the games in order to enhance their English communication skills during this one-hour programme.

Spelling Bee Competitions 2018

The English Department Spelling Bee Competition, held on 25th October, was well-attended by students from all classes. Senior and Junior form students crowded into the SAR where English Teachers, English Club members and other Student Helpers worked busily together. While some English Club members quizzed the competitors, others rewarded successful students with chops for their English Achievement Scheme Card and candies.

Competitors in the Spelling Bee were asked to spell out loud one easy word and one more difficult word. Both words had to be spelled correctly for a successful attempt. Many students came back several times to test their spelling skills and went away satisfied, with a fistful of candies and plenty of chops for their English Achievement Scheme Card!

To develop the English environment around the campus, the English Department invited a service provider to hold the S1 English Fun Day in the morning of 8th September for all S1 newcomers. There were 4 different themes and games, namely “stories”, “food”, “advertising” and “the world” during the Fun Day. THREE outstanding students, Chan Kwok Wai (S4A), Chu Ka Lok (S4A) and Tsang Tsz Fung (S4A) were awarded “The Harvard Book Prize 2018”, sponsored by The Harvard Club of Hong Kong. The award is given to students who "combine excellence in scholarship and high character, with achievement in other fields.” The award was launched in 1910. This year, the ceremony was held at La Salle College. More than 540 students from 180 secondary schools in Hong Kong participated in the ceremony. Teachers and parents also joined the ceremony to celebrate the excellent work of all the participants.

The aim of the Game is to explain the importance of savings and the positive value of managing wealth. In the competition, both 2A Lai Ka Wa and 2A Mak Chung Yin awarded the 1st runner-up and the 2nd runner-up respectively. In addition, our school achieved the Best Group Award. Financial Education Workshop

Our S2 students attended the 12-hour intensive Financial Education Workshop presented by Mr Edmond Lee during the last Christmas holidays. Mr Lee is our school graduate who has worked in banking and finance industry for about 30 years and now is renowned for studying and promoting the Child & Teenager Financial Education programmes in HK. During the 4-day workshop, students learnt the importance of savings, smart spending, the difference between speculation and investment; and comprehensive financial management. Finally, all students were awarded with a certificate presented by Mr Lee.

The first Staff Development Day in the year 2016-2017 was successfully held on 28th Aug, 2016. With the help of the educational psychologist, Cyrus Lo, and our social worker, Jenny Peng, the school organised a talk and a role-play about crisis management to let staff members know more about the appropriate attitude and procedures of handling crisis at school. Through the discussion after the role-play, staff members realised what we had not done well enough and came up with measures for better management in the future.

Attend the ceremony of ‘Hong Kong Liberal Studies & Wealth Management Competition’

On 11 July 2015, our school participated in the ‘Hong Kong Liberal Studies & Wealth Management Competition’. We were honoured to receive an ‘Enthusiastic Participation Award’ out of over 6,000 candidates from around 140 secondary schools in Hong Kong. The candidates were required to answer 60 MC questions within a given time limit. The competition merged the contents of liberal studies and wealth management with the aim of enhancing students’ money and wealth management skills whilst helping them to develop a positive idea of money and how to plan for the future. Students learnt techniques of financial management, understanding their responsibilities as consumers and investors, as well as being given insights into the creation of wealth to ensure a secure future.

Visited ‘HKMA Info Centre’ & ‘HKDPB’

On 1 April 2015, S4 BAFS students visited the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) Information Centre in IFC. This Exhibition Area introduced the roles and work of the HKMA, the development of money and banking history in Hong Kong, as well as the banknotes used in Hong Kong over the years. Students felt very excited trying to distinguish between the real and the fake banknotes.

Later, students joined the talks and workshop organized by the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board (HKDPB). They participated actively in the talk on the present deposit protection policy in Hong Kong, especially during the Q&A session and the puzzle group work. In fact, the representatives of the organization praised our students highly for their attentiveness and courtesy throughout the visit.

Secondary School a cappella Demonstration by Korea contemporary a cappella male group of 5 ˙『Exit』

Our Form 2 and 3 students participated in the cappella workshop on 25th March 2015 which held by the Hong Kong Federation of youth groups and it was sponsored by The Hockey Club Charities Trust. This education programme aims as promoting the musical genre and provide opportunities and platform for the youth to participate in this art form.
Our Students were given chances to see a professional performance that performed by a contemporary a cappella male group of 5. Their group name came from the idea that they want to make themselves and audience free from boring daily life through EXIT’s performances. They have won prize in the 2012 Asian Cup a cappella Competition and 2012 World Contemporary a cappella competition.

Students were well behaved during the workshop. The activity came to an end with cheers and unanimous applause.

Joyful Fruit Day 2014

In order to promote the daily fruit eating habit in school, with the generous help of the Parent-Teacher Association, Joyful Fruit Month was embarked by a ‘Fruit Party’ on April 29.

Two promotional activities, Crossword Puzzle and Four-frame Cartoons competitions, were held in the following month to encourage students to eat an adequate amount of fruit every day. It is hoped that the fruit eating spirit within school will be lifted to an unprecedented level.

Malaysian Chinese History, Geography, Culture and Science Study Tour

On March 11-March 15, our school’s Humanities Department and Science Department organized the "Malaysian Chinese History, Geography, Culture and Science Study Tour".

The event included a number of visits, including Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur City Centre, National Zoo and Chinatown etc. Also, during the tour, the students have visit SMK Datok Lokman Secondary School to learn more about the education background and difference in culture between Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Junior Form Lunch Hour Quiz Competitions

The Junior Form Lunch Hour Quiz Competitions, co-organized by L.S., V.A., Music, P.E., Computer & BAFS Subjects, was successfully held on 12 December 2013 at School Hall. The aim of this activity is to broaden the knowledge of Ng Wah Boys. Each Form 1 class delegates 3 Boys for the competition. A total of 12 boys participated the Competition. Also, all Form 1 Ng Wah Boys watched the Competition. It was very exciting in the Competition.
